Shimano EP6 or EP8: what does the code do?
The Shimano upgrade works with all Shimano motors as long as the e-bike has Bluetooth. How much more assistance you get depends on the motor. Here is the overview based on the shop's product page.
Maximum assistance per motor
| Motor | Assistance up to | Display |
|---|---|---|
| Shimano EP6 (EP600) | 45 km/h | shows your real speed |
| Shimano EP8 (EP800) | 32 km/h | shows your real speed |
| EP801, E8000, E7000, E6100, EP5 and others | depends on the model | shows your real speed |
For the other motors, the shop will tell you the exact limit before you buy.
The display stays correct
On many systems the display shows values that are too low after an upgrade. According to the shop this is not the case with the Shimano upgrade: you keep seeing your real speed, with no conversion and no GPS app. More in our guide Display after tuning.
Does the upgrade fit my bike?
All that matters is that your e-bike has Bluetooth; the motor itself does not matter for this. A simple test: if your bike pairs with the Shimano E-TUBE app on your smartphone, it has Bluetooth. Without Bluetooth you can retrofit the Shimano EW-EN100 adapter.
What you need for activation
- an Android smartphone or a Windows PC/laptop with Bluetooth (iPhone, iPad and Mac are not supported)
- a stable internet connection
- up to 20 minutes, because the website may install an update first depending on your bike's software
How activation works
- License code, link to the activation website and instructions arrive by email.
- Switch on the e-bike and turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone or PC.
- Open the website from the instructions and connect to the e-bike via Bluetooth.
- Enter the license code and activate the upgrade. You can also restore the original setting here.
One or two e-bikes
The shop offers the code for 1 e-bike or for 2 e-bikes (one code with two vehicle slots). Each activation permanently uses one slot; the code cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
